Recreational Fishing in Doha using the fishing rod has a set of guidelines. It is not a free zone outdoor activities in Qatar.
Anglers still enjoy the "pleasure of fishing" at the Corniche and the ports at Al Wakra, Ruwis and many other places in Qatar.
Exploiting the friendly weather, a large number of expatriates throng to the Corniche fish harbour and the seafront area near the Museum of Islamic Art to catch fish, especially late at night on weekends.
An Egyptian national, Moustafa Hussein, said, "April and May are ideal for rod-fishing.
Fish will move deep down to the sea or away from coastal area in extreme winter and peak of summer. Seeking chillness, fish go deep down in the day time in the summer.
But at night, they move up to the surface since the heat would have reduced." As per the guidelines, anglers are not allowed to catch fish with nets and the catching of fish with hooks on the mouth is banned.
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) makes and oversees a set of voluntary guidelines. Enforceable regulations are put in place by governments to ensure sustainable practice amongst anglers.
For many reasons the area close to the Corniche fish market is ideal for rod-fishing. The mix of fish blood and water flowing into the sea attracts fish to the surface in this area. For this reason, different varieties of fish get attracted to the area and the anglers are rewarded with a "better catch".
A fishing equipment vendor in Doha said that, "The sale of fishing rod has steadily increased in recent months.
Earlier, expatriates from Europe were our customers.
But now, a number of expatriates from Asian countries are also buying fishing-rods." Even though different kinds of fishing rods are available in Doha, fibreglass spinning rod is the most in demand. Different models of fishing rods are available in the market for the costs ranging from QR300 to QR2,000.
Even though rod-fishing may seem harmless and doesn"t damage the environment, using it close to city roads raises many problems related to the hygiene and cleanliness. While some anglers leave the remains of their baits carelessly on the pedestrian path along the Corniche, others leave their hooks which may pose danger to pedestrians, particularly children.
